We do like a challenge here at WAM, and when the owners from the Old Gate (OG) in Hebden Bridge contacted us to develop their brand and help with the opening launch for the new Bar and Restaurant – all in just six weeks – we grabbed it with both hands and said “no problem!”
With no time to waste, our Head of Creative met with the owner at the pub – which at the time was in the process of being totally gutted and refurbished – it was basically a building site. They quickly discussed what was required and what exactly they were trying to achieve from the pub.
In essence, the OG was to be a meeting place serving hearty meals using only the best locally-sourced ingredients, washed down with a vast range of guest ales and an impressive wine list. The brand needed to reflect this, whilst instantly standing out from the many established pubs in the area.
The owner was also eager to embrace the local area, so the external signs and internal ‘wordle’ were to be hand painted by a local sign writer, ‘Bryan the Brush’. Before long, the unique OG brand was created with elements of traditional style and flashes of modern vibrancy – it looked great!
Once the logo was complete, the WAM team set about building momentum for the brand, ready for the opening night. At this stage, the OG team were still working on the refurbishment, with literally no time to pull together any content for their new website. The paint was barely dry on the walls, let alone any photographs in existence at his this stage.
Not fazed by this, we proposed to launch the pub purely through social media. On this occasion, Facebook and Twitter were the best platforms to directly reach their target market. From a standing start, to launch evening, we created curiosity and a buzz around the town.
Within three weeks, they had gone from 0 to 500 relevant followers, all interacting with competitions, sourcing local suppliers, setting up meetings and basically involving the community. On the opening weekend, the place was absolutely heaving with smiling faces and happy customers. Local rumours have it that, the pub’s takings over the weekend were very good indeed. A very happy proprietor too!
Personally, we love this brand but more importantly, so did the client!
